Middletown’s HONOR shelter, home to over 100 adults and children, has launched New York State’s first dedicated sensory space for young children living in a shelter. These innovative “sensory rooms” provide a calming environment designed to help children manage sensory overload with the aid of specially selected tools and toys.

The sensory spaces feature a range of books, craft supplies, educational materials, and private areas for children to find respite. Carefully curated lighting, murals, and sensory-sensitive materials enhance the welcoming and nurturing atmosphere.

Beyond the sensory rooms, HONOR offers meals, educational support, school transportation, outdoor play areas, and indoor play spaces, like the Merlin’s Magic Space sponsored by Legoland. The shelter also provides vital services for individuals and families.

Executive Director Chris Molinelli highlighted the significance of the sensory rooms, calling them a symbol of compassion, inclusivity, and progress. The project received support from various organizations, including Orange County Think Differently, Pediatric Occupational Therapy Solutions, and SUNY Orange Occupational Therapy Program.
