Hoarding, unsafe living conditions, and mental health challenges left John evicted and disconnected from vital support services in his Orange County community. Even when he was provided with emergency shelter, the same issues resurfaced. His living habits created fire hazards and safety concerns for others in the facility.
John was homeless — again.
That is when HONOR’s Safe Options Support team stepped in. They collaborated closely with John to help him find permanent housing. It was not easy! John’s history
made landlords hesitant, but the SOS team did not give up. They tirelessly searched for a safe and stable placement and helped prepare John for conversations with property
owners who were willing to give him another chance.
Eventually, John moved into his new home. That is when the real challenge—and the real progress—began.
The SOS team started making in-person visits immediately. These were routine check-ins and hands-on coaching sessions focused on helping John build daily habits to maintain a safe, livable space. Together, the team and John tackled cleaning, organizing, and unlearning the patterns that had previously led to housing instability.
Three months later, John still has a place to call home. His space is clean, organized, and well cared for. More importantly, he now understands that maintaining his living space is the key to keeping a roof over his head. That shift in mindset has been transformative.
Thanks to the SOS program and HONOR’s vision for safe and affordable housing for all, John not only found shelter but also gained the tools to sustain it.
